If you didn’t know what hand sanitizer was before or you didn’t use it, chances are you DO NOW!
So what is the scoop on hand sanitizer since it is literally everywhere you go.
Well, one thing to keep in mind is that it actually does NOT clean your hands.
Sanitizer may kill germs, but it does not leave your hands dirt- and grime-free. In fact dirt, and any film on your hands may actually make it harder for sanitizer to do its job. Hand sanitizer also does not remove chemicals or heavy metals from your skin.
It can remove both the good and the bad bacteria from your hands and since the bad bacteria is more opportunistic, it returns sooner than the good that keeps it in check.
It is and, always will be second to soap and water.
Soap and water both clean and sanitize and they are more effective at killing certain germs.
Are you using it correctly? For hand sanitizer to work the way it should, your hands need to be free of dirt and grime. Pump one to two times into one palm. Rub your hands, including between your fingers, until your hands are dry. That’s about 20 seconds. What we are seeing for the most part are people simply wiping it off on their clothes shortly after squirting it onto their hands.
Not All Hand Sanitizers Are Created Equal
You should be using sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol. That way, you can be sure you’re getting the most germ-killing power. With the demand in sanitizer everyone seems to have jumped on the band wagon of making and selling it. Often with toxic ingredients such as methanol.
Not many people realize that hand sanitizers such as our compounded recipe had to receive approval from Health Canada for sale in Canada.
You have it at home, in the car in your laptop bag or purse but keep in mind that all hand sanitizers are alcohol-based. That means they’re also flammable and can be dangerous to children if consumed. Keep it away from children until it is time to use it.
You Can Use Too Much. The alcohol in hand sanitizer can lead to dry, cracked skin. That leaves an open door for different germs to get in.
When soap and water are not available, use just enough each time to keep that from happening. You can put lotion on right after your hands dry to soothe any irritation.
