THE PROS OF PROBIOTICS

SHOULD I TAKE A PROBIOTIC WHILE ON ANTIBIOTICS?

If your doctor has prescribed an antibiotic for you, the answer is yes. Antibiotics have been proven to be very effective in healing infections caused by "bad" bacteria. However, over the last decade science has shown that antibiotics also destroy the "friendly" bacteria in your gut. This can cause problems such as yeast infections, diarrhea and other disturbances in the immune system. Certain probiotics can help avoid these potential issues.

MICROFLORA, THE FRIENDLY BACTERIA

There are up to 2 kilos of "friendly" bacteria in the adult intestine called the gut flora or microflora. This type of bacteria produces vitamins B and K which assists food digestion, as well as offer protection from various infections. Microflora abnormalities do correlate with many inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.

WHO IS AT RISK?

Using antibiotics can reduce the microflora. There is a higher risk this will happen if the microflora is already stressed by other factors. Other risk factors can include age, unhealthy lifestyle, travelling, stress and dietary changes or poor diet.
